Associated Garden

Situated about 180 km away, the Circle maintains two experimental gardens at Pauri: one at Nagdev Block, covering about 14 ha, and another at Khirsu, covering about 8 ha. The Nagdevblock of the garden has been designated as “National Gymnosperm collections” and include species like Abiespindrow, Cedrusdeodara, Cupressustorulosa, Pinuswallichiana, Juniperus, Taxodium, etc. Among the recently introduced important species are the medicinally important Taxuswallichiana, the `living fossil’ Ginkgo biloba and rare and endemic palm Trachycarpustakil.

At Khirsoo, the forested area is dominated by old Quercus, Rhododendrons, and Berberis, with a host of epiphytic ferns, orchids, lichens and bryophytes and is being maintained as “Nature Reserve”.

The Circle is also having a small botanical garden in the land adjoining the Office cum Herbarium building at Dehra Dun to provide a window to the west Himalayan flora. The garden has a large collection of medicinal plants, wild edibles, RET species and cultivated plants. Two green houses have also been constructed for providing suitable environmental conditions to some of the plants. About 500 plant species, including about 70 species of orchids, collected from different parts of N.W. Himalaya as well as other parts of the country have been introduced in the botanical garden. A Separate medicinal plant garden has also been established on Golden Jubilee day of this circle by planting 50 medicinal tree species on this occasion.
