The Centre was established on 8th August 1977 for exploration and study of the plant wealth of the state of Arunachal Pradesh, which covers an area of 83,743 km2. The regional centre is located at Senkie View, Itanagar. The Centre maintains a Regional Herbarium under the acronym of ‘ARUN’ and at present, it houses around 36,000 specimens of Angiosperms and Pteridophytes. This centre was established with the aim to explore and document the plant wealth of the state of Arunachal Pradesh. The following are the mandate of BSI, APRC, Itanagar. 

The following are the mandate of BSI APRC, Itanagar.

1. Undertaking intensive floristic surveys and collection of plants and detailed information on their occurrence, distribution, ecology and economic utility of plants in the state.

2. Collecting, identifying and distributing materials that may be of use to educational and research institutions.

3. Acting as the custodian of authentic collections in well planned herbaria and documenting plant resources in the form of local, district and state flora.
