The Experimental Botanic Garden of Botanical Survey of India at Barapani (Umiam), Ri Bhoi, Meghalaya with an area of ca 25 acres is one of a kind botanic garden a kind botanic garden in the country which is an important conservatory for more than 800 plant species of NE India. These includes trees, shrubs, lianas, herbs having ecological, horticultural, agricultural and medicinal importance. Out of these, 306 species belong to the Endemic Endangered and Threatened category belonging different plant groups including orchids, citrus, bamboos and zingibers. Out of these, 306 species belong to the Endemic Endangered and Threatened (EET) category. The garden has Orchidarium, Fernery, Bamboosetum, Pitcher Plant House, and other important plant sections viz. Zingiber section, Ginger section, Medicinal Plant Section, Citrus Section, Dioscorea Section, Tree Fern Avenue etc. The garden has more than 350 species of orchids belonging to various genera. The Experimental Botanic Garden also serves as a living conservatory of important plant species for researchers and students to understand species diversity, evolution and conservation. The garden therefore, is regularly visited by scientists, researchers and students from different institutes, colleges and schools from across the country and abroad. The garden also houses a plant nursery for raising and multiplication of seedlings of ecologically, economically and endemic plant species which are supplied to different stakeholders free of cost for conservation and ecological restoration
