The herbarium of the centre is internationally registered in 2020 with Index Herborium, New York Botanic Garden, New York (USA) as BSS (Botanical Survey Solan). Herbaria documents the world's flora and provides a constant and permanent record of plant diversity. The role of herbaria is important as the rate of habitat destruction increases due to climate change and invasion by invasive alien plant species as a result rapid changes observed in species' ranges and in all aspects of plant ecology. Herbarium is a collection of pressed, dried plant specimens mounted on specified sheets, identified and arranged in the order of an approved and well known system of classification. Herbaria provides facilities to discover or confirm the identity of a plant, document the concepts of the specialists who have studied the specimens in the past and provide locality data for planning future plant exploration tours and expeditions. 

Botanical Survey Solan (BSS) herbarium of Botanical Survey of India, at Solan, Himachal Pradesh will provide a source of knowledge about the flora of High Altitude Western Himalayan Region of India, which includes the states of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. At present it houses around 5000 herbarium specimens belonging to Western Himalaya, which were collected under various plant exploration tours conducted in the past from Northern Regional Centre, Dehradun. In the coming years herbarium will be enriched by more than 10,000 specimens by conducting floral exploration tours and expeditions in the area under its jurisdiction. The herbarium will provide material for taxonomic, anatomical and cytological studies to researchers, students and scientists of various colleges and universities working in India and abroad. It will also act as a reservoir of gene pool studies. Herbarium will also help to identify the plant specimens with available protologues and housed specimens. Cryptogamic section of the herbaria will also preserve the specimens of Algae, Fungi and Bryophytes (both mosses and liverworts) besides ferns and flowering plants.
